What You Ned to Know About Personal Branding and Brand Elevation

Personal Branding and Brand Elevation
What You Need to Know About Personal Branding and Brand Elevation

There are a lot of lessons you can learn from the film and TV industry. They have been producing and marketing content for a long time. At a recent eWomen Network event, Rania Walker from Sparq Street shared some tips on building and elevating your personal brand. She asked the attendees how many of them wanted the opportunity to be featured on television and many hands went up. Although getting on TV has never been a goal of mine, as I listened to what Walker had to say, I realized that I could easily apply the points to content marketing.

If you have dreams of appearing on TV (or simply want to become a better content producer), you have to assume the role of a producer. Producers have to know how to brand and elevate a TV show or film to get the maximum amount of viewers.

So what exactly does this mean for you?

In your role as a producer, you have to understand that the best producers care about three things:

  1. Audience
  2. Numbers
  3. Teach, inform and share

So, if you understand these three things, you have a serious shot at being the featured guest on an on-air program. Additionally, understanding the three things allows you to build your personal brand, and in the process you can build your tribe. When you translate the three things in layman’s terms, here’s what it means.

  1. Know what you do, that’s different and bring it to the table. That means you have to know your unique offering and why you matter. Why should anyone listen to you?
  2. Watch the show that you want to appear on because you have to know and understand who you are going to pitch to. You have to find a way to relate to the audience. You have to appeal to the host’s self-interest. If you are not interested in being featured on a show and simply want to create a following for your blog, who are your readers? Create three to five reader profiles, and for each post you write, write it with only one of those profiles in mind.
  3. Find your hook. What makes you newsworthy? What’s going on that you can add a new spin to? What’s trending? Besides listening to the local, national and international news, if you take a look at Twitter, you will quickly see what’s trending. Google Trends is another place to discover what’s trending.
  4. Find a natural tie-in to what you do. Is there a way you can work in St Patrick Day, or any other recognized day? Create alerts on topics of interest using Google Alerts and Mention to enable you to find more ways to tie in what you do to the bigger world.
  5. Have a great, catchy headline – something that evokes an emotional response. More people will pay attention to what you have to say if your headline appeals to them.
  6. Speak their language. If you want to appear on a program, understand the language they use. If you are creating content, use the language that your ideal readers can relate to.
  7. Share – your primary goal is to teach, inform and share what you know with the audience/readers.

If you follow Rania Walker’s tips for personal branding and brand elevation, you will build and elevate your personal brand in no time, and have a tribe that cares about what you have to say.
